A brief history on the pastry that ignited the craze
Long before layered doughnuts arrived in Boca Raton, bakery fans were lining up in New York City for another croissant-doughnut mashup. In May 2013, French pastry chef Dominique Ansel introduced the Cronut at his SoHo bakery, combining the flaky layers of a croissant with the shape and indulgence of a doughnut.
The pastry became an overnight sensation, drawing lines around the block and earning recognition as one of Time magazine's best inventions of 2013.
The Cronut was trademarked by Ansel, but its popularity helped spark a wave of croissant-doughnut hybrids and other mash-up pastries across the country.
Today's layered doughnuts, including those sold by Parlor Doughnuts, tap into that same appeal: buttery, laminated dough with the crisp exterior and sweet toppings people expect from a doughnut.
