Just one day after initially rejecting an offer from the state, a Palm Beach Gardens man changed his mind and agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter for the accidental overdose death of Daniel Vetter three days after Valentine's Day in 2024.
On Aug. 14, Circuit Judge James Nutt sentenced 26-year-old Casey Lafontant, who also pleaded to the sale and trafficking of fentanyl, to 30 years in prison. The sentencing came just as Nutt's court was preparing for jury selection for trial. The judge also revoked Lafontant's driver's license for six months.
Assistant State Attorney Kyley Brown argued that on Feb. 16, 2024, Vetter arranged to meet with Lafontant to purchase fentanyl. Vetter later suffered a fatal overdose from the highly addictive painkiller.
Doctors listed Vetter's cause of death as exposure to acute xylazine, an animal tranquilizer, and fentanyl intoxication.
An online obituary indicated that Vetter was 31 and lived in Jupiter.
Lafontant was identified from text messages from both his and Vetter's phone.
Hours after her brother's death, Monica Vetter worked with law enforcement to meet with Lafontant, who she said she knew of having a history of drug use, and to stage a buy from him. They met at a RaceTrac gas station
Once the drug deal was complete, Monica gave the "caps" she purchased to officers. The purple color of the powdered narcotics Monica purchased matched those found at the crime scene.
Deputies searched Lafontant's home in the Legacy Drive apartment complex and found powdered fentanyl and empty capsules.
In court filings, Jack Fleischman, Lafontant's defense attorney, said prosecutors couldn't prove his client's drugs killed Vetter. He pointed to testimony by the state's own experts, who said there was no scientific way to trace the drugs to a particular dealer, source or batch of narcotics.
Had he maintained his innocence and fought the charges at trial, Lafontant risked being sentenced to life in prison.
