Michael Kim could not be stopped at the second round of the 2026 3M Open. The 33-year-old drained 12 birdies en route to carding a near-record score of 59 on Friday, July 24.
Kim ran off five straight birdies on the front nine, then finished his day with four in a row. His bogey-free day was good for a 12-under score on the day, rocketing him to the top of the leaderboard at 14 under at TPC Twin Cities
.The 59 was the 15th such score in PGA Tour history and the 16th sub-60 round. His run of birdies started on the par-4 third hole, then he nailed two more on the par-4 ninth and par-4 10th. After reaching the green on the 582-yard par-5 No. 12 in two, Kim easily two-putted his way to his eighth bird of the day.

Kim got
off on another roll starting on the par-4 15th. He birdied Nos. 16 and 17 to have a shot at history on the 577-yard par-5 18th. Looking at a 24-foot putt for his place in history, Kim sank it in from just off the lip of the green, giving an emphatic fist-pump to mark the occasion.

It's the first 59 on the PGA Tour since Jake Knapp did so at the 2025 Cognizant Classic of the Palm Beaches. It's also the second such score in as many days at Tour-sanctioned events: Scott Stevens also accomplished the feat Thursday, July 23 at the Osprey Valley Open on the PGA Tour Americas at TPC Toronto.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, and a product of Cal-Berkeley, Kim won the 2018 John Deere Classic and was one of the runners-up at April's Texas Open. He has made the cut just once in five previous appearances at the 3M Open.
Lowest PGA Tour score ever
Kim's 59 is tied for the second-lowest round at an official PGA Tour event. Jim Furyk shot a 58 at the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship.
