I was sitting on my couch when I read
about [President] Trump’s intention to raise the cost of the drugs by ending Medicare subsidies granted under the Biden administration. Yikes. And it’s not just me − it’s about 25 million Americans with Part D Medicare drug coverage. Great move politically, huh?
Our president has no problem spending billions on a ballroom, a triumphal arch, a retrofitted, “gifted” jet from a Middle East dictator or a war in Iran, which even MAGA folks detest. Yet he can’t help millions of seniors on fixed incomes who depend on life-saving medications. If you’re a senior like me and you need any more justification to unseat Trump-backed, Republican office seekers, there you go. Now, please spread the word − and vote.

While Paul fiddles, cyclospora churns
Sen. Rand Paul is pursuing an irrational vendetta against Dr. Anthony Fauci, a man who has made protecting Americans his life’s work. Paul is enraged over the handling of COVID. This issue has been explored over and over. Meanwhile, millions of people are wondering when they will ever again be able to eat fresh fruits and vegetables without fear. As the federal government downsizes medical staff, we need many more skilled doctors and scientists to track down the causes of various outbreaks of horrific illnesses, such as that caused by cyclospora. Reports saying that lettuce is probably the cause of illness is not reassuring when it is known that cyclospora can attach to many fresh foods. Here’s hoping that we can bring our country back to the 21st Century soon.

Where's Frank Cerabino when needed?
Frank Cerabino hasn’t been gone long but already readers don’t recognize a good satire when they see it. In the July 30 op-ed a writer asks what the point of Rex Huppke’s column on the Odyssey was. Evidently identifying fact-based journalism is getting more difficult in today’s chaotic environment of “that can’t possibly be real.” Mr. Huppke’s column was an attempt to make fun of all the ridiculous criticism of the movie, which I found fairly humorous. We could all use a little more humor these days if only we could recognize it.

Heed the 'butterfly effect' of global warming
The butterfly effect says that small errors in initial conditions of numerical solutions to differential equations can cause large changes in the solutions, an important idea in the mathematical theory of chaos. But what sort of butterfly is the extra million megatons of TNT heat energy in the ocean, associated with global warming, and caused by excess atmospheric greenhouse gases from human activity? Is the entire universe chaotic, save the systematic decision making of intelligent life? Aren’t all forms of life systematic, because reproduction of living things is systematic regardless of intelligence? Or, is the problem human greed that wants to subjugate the planet?
