A lightning strike triggered a gas leak and water main break in a North Palm Beach neighborhood Sunday afternoon, July 26, officials said.
North Palm Beach Fire Rescue said lightning struck a melaleuca tree along the 500 block of Kingfish Road around 2 p.m. on July 26. The strike caused a gas leak and ruptured a 6-inch water main.
The agencies Seacoast Utility Authority, Florida Public Utilities, and Florida Power & Light responded to the scene. About 20 homes in the neighborhood remained without water Monday morning as crews worked to repair the break.
As of 11 a.m. Monday, July 27, there is no estimated timeline for when water service will be restored. Officials gave no update as to the gas leak but said water from the main break has since receded.
