Ben Shelton has been waiting for his chance to join the ranks of the tennis elite. Could the former Florida Gator claim his first major title at the U.S. Open?
The 23-year-old burst onto the scene by clinching UF's national championship in 2021 and winning the NCAA singles title in 2022. He's come closest to a grand slam here at Flushing Meadows, reaching the semifinals in 2023 before coming up short against Novak Djokovic. Shelton has gone on a few other runs since then, with a semifinal appearance at the 2025 Australian Open and quarterfinal showings at Wimbledon that summer and Melbourne in January, losing to Jannik Sinner each time.
But Sinner is out of this tournament with a knee injury, and the other behemoth in the men's draw, Carlos Alcaraz,
is playing for the first time since April. As the highest-ranked American in the field, it's not hard to see Shelton riding the home-court advantage to win the U.S. Open, something no American man has done since Andy Roddick 23 years ago.

Shelton enters the year's final major a bit hot and cold. On one hand, he tore through the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, winning his fourth tournament of the year without dropping a set. Then he laid an egg the following week at Cincinnati, losing his opening match for the fifth time, including at Wimbledon. Maybe he'll get some more good luck from his girlfriend, women's soccer star Trinity Rodman, like he did when she showed up in Montreal.
