Wyndham Championship picks, predictions, odds: Who wins in 2026?

What is the story about?

The final chance to make the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup Playoffs, as it has been since 2007, will be in Greensboro, N.C., beginning on Aug. 6 at the Wyndham Championship.

The field of 145 players will battle to be among the top 70 on the points list and qualify for the first leg of the playoffs, Aug.13-16 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, at TPC Southwind in Memphis.

Beginning as the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938, the event has been won by World Golf Hall of Fame members Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Billy Casper, Sandy Lyle and Davis Love III, who supervised the renovation of the Sedgefield Country Club, a Donald Ross course that goes back a century.

Snead held the PGA Tour record for winning the same event the most times, before Tiger Woods came along. Snead won

at Greensboro eight times, a mark that was tied by Woods at the Farmers Insurance Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Greensboro also was the first PGA Tour event in the South that allowed an African-American player, Charlie Sifford, in 1961. He tied for fourth.

Wyndham Championship favorites, odds

Defending champion Cameron Young is the easy favorite by BetMGM, at +850 on the money line. The next-best bet is rookie Jackson Koivun at +2000, Hideki Matsuyama at +2200 and Justin Thomas and Ben Griffin at +2800.

The only 2026 major champion in the field, PGA winner Aaron Rai, is +3300.

Wyndham Championship picks

Hideki Matsuyama: The Big Guy from Japan has quietly put together a solid season, making all 19 cuts with 14 top-25 finishes. In his last four starts, he's tied for 14th at The Travelers, tied for 14th at the Open, tied for third at the 3M Open and tied for 11th at the Rocket Classic. Matsuyama has posted scores in the 60s in 13 of his last 16 competitive rounds. He's got a checkered past at Sedgefield: five missed cuts but four top-20s, capped by a tie for third in 2016.

Cameron Young: The third-ranked player in the world, broke through with his first career victory in Greensboro last year and nearly lapped the field in doing it. With a Players Championship and the Cadillac Championship victories on his 2026 ledger, a strong showing in the FedEx Playoffs could put him in the Player of the Year conversation. Young is on form, with a tie for eighth at the Rocket and a tie for second at the Open in his last two starts.

Alex Smalley: Three of the last four PGA Tour winners were first-time champions, so here's a strong candidate for a fifth. Smalley had a marvelous spring and early summer, finishing among the top 25 in nine of 10 starts, beginning with a tie for 24th at The Players. Four of those victories were top-10s, capped by a tie for second at the PGA. He's tailed off a bit in recent weeks but he's got a home game — Smalley went to Duke and plays out of Sedgefield.
