Chipotle has launched a nationwide recall after learning of a potential salmonella outbreak affecting their jalapeño supply. The company has about 26 stores in Palm Beach County, though it's unclear whether the recall affects those stores.
In a statement, the company reported that some peppers from a particular grower in Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors were affected and the company has removed those peppers from its restaurants and is now sourcing its jalapeños from a different grower.
The company did not specify which locations had received contaminated peppers. The Palm Beach Post has reached out to Chipotle for comment about stores in Palm Beach County.
Both the CDC and FDA said they do not consider there to be a current
ongoing risk from Chipotle restaurants.
This jalapeño crisis comes amid another food related illness, this one tied to contaminated iceberg lettuce. Shoppers have been steering clear of the leafy green over concerns of cyclospora, a parasite that can bring on explosive diarrhea. Though Chipotle also serves lettuce, they do not use iceberg, as the company explained in a different press release.
"Chipotle does not serve iceberg lettuce in its restaurants, and its romaine and Supergreens salad blend are sourced in the U.S., not Mexico. Chipotle is continuing to follow the Cyclospora investigation closely and will evaluate any new information and take appropriate action."
