The Americas High School football team proved it has the heart of a champion against Hanks District 1-5A, Division 1 opener for both teams.
Senior quarterback Maurice Edwards scored on a three-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left in the game and then scored on a two-point conversion to lift the Trailblazers to a 50-49 win at the SAC 1 on Thursday, Oct. 8.
Americas is now 2-4 overall and 1-0 in district, while Hanks is 3-3 overall and 0-1.
The game lasted three hours and finished at 10:30 p.m. Americas never led until Edwards' two-point conversion. Hanks had one final try to win it, but Americas defensive back Adrian Esquivel intercepted a Jordan Morales near the end zone to seal the win.
Hanks scored the game's first 14 points and took a 28-14 lead
into halftime. Running back Austin Deucher scored three touchdowns and Morales connected with Alex Robles on a touchdown pass to lead the Knights.
What's next for Hanks and Americas
Americas will play El Dorado at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16 at the SAC 2 and Hanks will visit Horizon at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.
