Lowriders roll into El Paso’s Chicano Park for Lincoln Park Day

Lowriders from near and far rolled into Lincoln Park - El Paso’s Chicano Park for the annual Lincoln Park Day celebration.

The event on Sunday, Sept. 20, celebrated El Paso’s Chicano culture and community with lowriders, live music, performances and art.

Michelle Gonzalez, 15, and her dad, Mike Gonzalez, worked together on the car they have brought to Lincoln Park Day for the past four years.

"Every time, it feels like I’m coming here for the first time again," Michelle said. "It brings me so much joy being around people I love."

The 1965 Ford Galaxie originally belonged to Mike’s father, and the family has continued the tradition.

"We built it together," Mike said. "She picked the colors, she picked the design."

Members of the Lincoln Park Conservation Committee also unveiled a new sign officially identifying Lincoln Park as El Paso’s Chicano Park during the event. The addition to the Lincoln Park name was approved by the El Paso City Council earlier this month.

"Cultura, la raza," Mike Gonzalez said. "We're not Mexicanos. We're not Americans. We are Chicanos."

"We're not going to lose our culture, no matter how much they try to push back. This is us, and we're here to stay."
