A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for El Paso and much of New Mexico.
The watch is in effect until 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, as storms could produce wind gusts of up to 70 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning.
Heavy rain is also expected, with the chance for flash flooding. The threat of flash flooding is particularly concerning as soils across the region remain saturated from heavy rainfall in late September, the National Weather Service said.

The watch also covers several communities across New Mexico, including Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Ruidoso, Roswell, Silver City and Farmington.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to develop. Residents should monitor weather updates
and be prepared to seek shelter if a warning is issued.
Safety tips during a flood
During a flood, water levels and flow rates can change quickly. Avoid floodwaters at all costs and evacuate immediately when water starts to rise.
- Stay informed: Listen to radio and television, including NOAA Weather Radio if possible; check the Internet and social media for information and updates.
- Get to higher ground: If you live in a flood-prone area or are camping in a low-lying area, get to higher ground immediately.
- Obey evacuation orders: If told to evacuate, do so immediately. Lock your home when you leave. If you have time, disconnect utilities and appliances.
- Practice electrical safety: Don't enter a basement or any room if water covers electrical outlets or if cords are submerged. If you see sparks or hear buzzing, crackling, snapping, or popping noises, get out. Stay out of water that may contain electricity.
- Avoid floodwaters: Don't walk through floodwaters. Only six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet. If moving water traps you, move to the highest possible point and, if possible, call 911.
