What will be the newest team in the USL isn’t playing games yet, but Athletico Dallas has their first player: Mexican legend Javier “Chichirito” Hernandez.
The 38-year-old signed a two-year deal, with a club option for a third, for a Dallas team set to begin play in the USL next season and presumably in a conference with the El Paso Locomotive. Hernandez is the Mexico national team’s all-time leading scorer and worked as a television commentator in this past World Cup.
He last played in 2025 for Guadalajara Chivas and earlier in his career played 10 years in top European leagues.

Hernandez said. “I want to help create a winning culture, inspire young players across North Texas, and give our supporters a team they can believe in from the very beginning. I didn't come here simply to finish my career. I came here to help build the future of football in Dallas.”
