Police officers arrived at the home at about 3:10 p.m. and found the body of David De Coste. During a protective sweep of the home, officers "detected signs of other individuals inside," police stated.
The other people inside — later identified as John Michael De Coste and De La Torre — were not immediately found. Officers surrounded the house and the EPPD SWAT team and Crisis Management Team were deployed.

The pair inside the house eventually exited the house, detained and arrested as part of the homicide investigation by the Crimes Against Persons Unit.
