A call of an attempted home burglary sparked a wild, multi-agency e-bike chase in Horizon City ending with two boys in custody and the electric bicycles impounded, police said.
The juveniles on the small but quick e-bikes were chased Sunday night, Aug. 30, through several neighborhood streets, sidewalks and across a retail parking lot, a park and into the desert, stated a Horizon City police news release by Officer Carolyn Morales.
The juveniles were arrested on charges of evading arrest in a vehicle, reckless driving and evading arrest on foot. They were handed to juvenile detention authorities. Names were not disclosed because they are underage.

typically go as fast as 20 mph to 28 mph.

The incident started about 8:30 p.m. when a resident reported an attempted home burglary in the 300 block of Duanesburg Street, police said.
After hearing a loud noise at the front door, the resident viewed home security video showing three masked persons attempting to enter the house before riding off on e-bikes, said police, who later determined nothing was stolen.
A Horizon City police officer spotted the three people riding e-bikes near Kenazo Avenue and Horizon Boulevard. The bikes fled and a chase continued involving Horizon City police officers and El Paso County sheriff's deputies.
As the pursuit went on through neighborhoods, additional help was requested from the sheriff's Special Operations Unit and the Texas Department of Public Safety, police said.
In a scene posted on a social media video, a rider on an e-bike crosses Golden Eagle Park on a pedestrian path as a half dozen police cars with red-and-blue lights flashing scramble along streets next to the park.
Juvie e-bike riders busted
One of the juveniles lost control of the e-bike while attempting to enter a desert area, crashed and was arrested, police said.
Officers obtained information on the location of a second juvenile. When police and deputies showed up, he again fled on the e-bike before abandoning it. He ran through a neighborhood and was eventually located and detained, police said.
It is unclear if the third rider was detained.
Horizon PD added in a social media post, "When an officer attempts to stop you, stop. Continuing to flee can turn an already serious situation into a much more dangerous one and may result in additional criminal charges."
