After two days of severe downpours in Sun City, El Paso Independent School District has announced its latest round of cancellations and postponements, including games and homecoming parades.
Baseball and softball games for district middle schools were canceled, and tennis matches scheduled for 4:30 p.m. today were postponed until tomorrow because of an EPISD weather alert on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Austin and Burges High School homecoming parades were also canceled and will be rescheduled.
"El Paso ISD will continue to monitor weather conditions and will keep families informed of any additional changes. Please continue to check official El Paso ISD communication channels for the latest updates before heading to an activity," the district said in a news
release.
Among events continuing as planned are extended day schedules and freshman and junior varsity football at Coronado High School if field conditions are playable and there is no lightning in the area. Freshman will play at 5:30 p.m., followed by junior varsity at 7 p.m.
YISD confirms no weather cancellation
Ysleta Independent School District confirmed there were no weather alerts at this time, with no cancellations or postponements today or tomorrow.
SISD still monitoring weather
The El Paso Times contacted the Socorro Independent School District regarding any weather alerts that could lead to cancellations or postponements planned for the next two days, but the district did not respond by the time of publication.
CISD cancels district games
In a social media post on Wednesday, Oct. 23, they wrote, "due to transportation issues affecting the visiting teams, all middle school basketball games scheduled for Canutillo and Alderete have been canceled. The Canutillo High School varsity volleyball game against El Paso High postponed Tuesday has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. today at Canutillo High School. Please stay tuned for additional weather-related announcements and updates."
The National Weather Service in El Paso issued a Flash Flood Warning for El Paso County early Wednesday, Sept. 23, after radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain. Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain had fallen in the warned area by 3:02 a.m. MDT, with another 0.5 to 1.5 inches possible.
The warning included West El Paso, Central El Paso, Northeast El Paso, East El Paso, Far East El Paso, Mission Valley, Horizon City, Clint, Anthony, Santa Teresa, Sunland Park, Canutillo and San Elizario.
