It’s National Taco Day, and several restaurants are celebrating with freebies and buy-one-get-one-free deals.
National Taco Day falls on Tuesday, Oct. 6, giving taco lovers another reason to grab their favorite meal at a discount.
While tacos are now a staple of Mexican cuisine, their exact origins remain unclear. According to the Smithsonian, one theory traces the word “taco” back to 18th-century silver mines in Mexico. Miners used the term to describe small explosive charges wrapped in paper and used to break apart rock.
References to tacos in archives and dictionaries began appearing toward the end of the 19th century. One of the earliest varieties described was the taco de minero, or “miner’s taco.”
