As Election Day is just weeks away, a new poll in the Texas gubernatorial race indicates it will be one of the closest elections in state history.
Gov. Greg Abbott leads Democrat candidate Gina Hinojosa 48.8% to 44.5% in aWednesday, Sept. 30, poll by PollMax. That represents a margin of 4.2%, making the race a toss-up.
Among the closest races in the state were Republican Bill Clements against Democrat John Hill in 1978 with a 0.72% margin. In 1990, Democrat Ann Richards and Republican Clayton Williams had a 2.55% margin. Finally, Republican George W. Bush defeated Richards in 1994 with a margin of 7.6%.
The new poll comes on the heels of Abbott stepping up attacks on Hinojosa, with his camp branding her "the most progressive liberal in the Texas
Legislature," the campaign said in a statement on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
They said Hinojosa repeatedly "put the socialist left’s radical gender agenda ahead of the health and wellbeing of impressionable young children," they continued.
Important dates for 2026 Texas election
The last day to register to vote for the General Election is Oct. 5, either online, by mail, or in person.
Early voting starts Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 30. The absentee ballot request deadline is Oct. 23 for mail requests or Oct. 19 for in-person requests. The absentee ballot return deadline is Nov. 3, by mail or in person on Election Day.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
