The 2026 high school football season is five weeks old and October means teams across El Paso are really getting into the important phase of the 10-game regular season.
Here is a look at some of the top teams, top moments and some surprises through the first five weeks.
El Paso Andress living up to expectations
The Eagles are 5-0 and it comes as no shock. The Eagles would have been a contender to win a district title in Class 5A, Division 2 this season, but instead are competing in Class 4A after the latest UIL realignment.
Andress won nine games in 2025, including a playoff victory vs. Wichita Falls Memorial. In 2026, Andress has already defeated strong programs such as Las Cruces Centennial, Franklin, Chapin and Americas. The Eagles will get tested in District 1-4A, Division 1 against
Austin, Riverside, Ysleta and San Elizario. If the Eagles get through district unscathed, they will be battle tested for what they hope will be a successful postseason.
Texas District 1-6A solid
No surprise here, but District 1-6A has been what most people figured it would be. Eastwood, Pebble Hills and Eastlake are all 4-1 with solid non-district showings.
Coronado is on a three-game win streak, Franklin is young and just 1-3, but improving and Socorro is fun to watch when the offense is clicking.
Eastwood, Pebble Hills and Coronado are all 1-0 in district play, but there are several big games left to play to determine the four teams that will make the playoffs.
Hats off to San Elizario
The Eagles have been one of the feel good stories this season with a 3-2 record. San Eli won one game in 2025, but the team has seen much improved play as it heads into Friday's matchup with Fabens. The Eagles have played good defense and are getting strong production all the way around on offense.
Good wins for El Paso teams vs. out of town teams
- In Class 3A, Anthony has defeated Capitan (NM) and Van Horn.
- In Class 4A, Ysleta defeated Big Spring and Fort Stockton, Riverside defeated Seminole, Andress defeated Las Cruces Centennial and Fabens defeated Van Horn.
- In Class 6A, Pebble Hills defeated Midland High and Eastlake defeated Midland Lee.

Which El Paso teams could win playoff games in 2026?
- In Class 4A, Andress is likely to have success in the postseason with its explosive offense. Riverside, Ysleta and Austin have the potential to win in the postseason, but much of it could come down to seeding in the playoffs and the opponents they face.
- In Class 5A, Canutillo, Chapin, Del Valle and El Dorado have the best chance to win a postseason game. Since 2013, Canutillo has won multiple playoff games on four occasions.
- In Class 6A, Eastwood and Pebble Hill have been solid through five games and are positioned well to have an opportunity to find success in the playoffs. Eastlake played well in its first four games, but a hand injury to quarterback Julian Williams could limit what the team will be able to do on offense.
