A woman died after she was struck by a truck as she was lying on I-10 for unknown reasons in East El Paso, authorities said.
El Paso Police Department's Special Traffic Investigations Unit investigators responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, on Interstate 10 West near Lee Trevino Drive, police spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo said in a news release.
The woman, who police only identified as Jane Doe, was "for unknown reasons" lying on the highway when she was hit by a white 2023 GMC Sierra driven by a 34-year-old man, the news release states. Police originally said in a news alert that the crash involved a semitrailer.
The GMC driver was unable to avoid hitting the woman. She died from the injuries
she suffered in the crash.
No further information was released as the crash remains under investigation. This is the 39th traffic-related death of 2026 compared to 40 at this same time last year.
The crash closed the interstate for several hours as police investigated. The highway was reopened before the early morning traffic rush.
