El Paso and the surrounding region shattered 10 daily heatrecords as triple-digit temperatures baked much of the Borderland.
El Paso International Airport reached 106 degrees on Aug. 25, breaking the previous record of 104 set in 2002, according to the National Weather Service. Las Cruces also hit 106 degrees, while Deming reached 105 and Santa Teresa climbed to 105.
Other record highs were reported in Fort Bayard, Gila Hot Springs, Hillsboro, Truth or Consequences, White Signal and Mimbres.
Triple-digit temperatures are expected to stick around into the weekend before highs dip into the upper 90s by Sunday, Aug. 30. Rain chances will also increase, with isolated thunderstorms possible across the region.
Heat will continue in September, National Weather Service says
High temperatures will continue to be three
to seven degrees above average through the first week of September, according to the National Weather Service.
El Paso is well beyond its average end date for triple-digit heat, which is Aug. 3, though the most recent occurrence was on Sep. 27, 2024.
The National Weather Service updated its three-month outlook on Aug. 20, which includes weather predictions for October, November and December.
El Paso and the rest of Texas have equal chances of near-normal temperatures. Rain chances for all of West Texas are very likely to be above normal, according to the outlook.
