A 31-year-old man died after he was struck by a car as he was "for unknown reasons" walking on the freeway near Downtown El Paso, authorities said.
The man, whose name has not been released, was walking about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, on Interstate 10 East near Porfirio Diaz Street, El Paso Police Department spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo said in a news release.
An investigation revealed the man "for unknown reasons" was walking on the freeway when he was struck by 2026 White Mazda ZX90 driven by a 47-year-old woman, who was unable to avoid the pedestrian, the release states.
The man died from the injuries he suffered in the crash. No further information has been released as the El Paso Police Department's Special Traffic Investigations
Unit continues to investigate the fatal crash.
Police believe the contributing factor in this collision was the pedestrian on the roadway, the news release states.
I-10 East near Downtown was shut down for more than eight hours as police investigated the crash.
This is the 35th traffic-related death of 2026 compared to 37 at the same time last year.
