President Donald Trump’s approval rating continues to be below 40% in several recent national polls as the country moves closer to the 2026 midterm elections.
The New York Times’ presidential approval
polling average showed Trump with a 39% approval rating and 58% disapproval rating as of Sept. 16. The tracker combines recent national surveys to provide an overall look at Americans’ views of the president.Other polls have found similar results.
Trump polls today
A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted Sept. 11-14 found Trump’s approval rating at 35% among U.S. adults, up from a record low 33% in the previous Reuters/Ipsos survey. The poll surveyed 1,143 adults nationwide.
Meanwhile, a Marquette Law School national pollconducted Sept. 2-9 found 37% of adults approved of Trump’s
performance and 63% disapproved. That was down from 40% approval in Marquette’s July survey and from 48% near the beginning of Trump’s second term.
What issues are affecting Trump's approval rating?
Recent polling has shown lower approval for Trump on several economic issues.
The September Marquette poll found 28% of adults approved of Trump’s handling of the economy, while 19% approved of his handling of inflation and the cost of living. His ratings were higher on border security, at 49%, and immigration, at 43%.
The latest Times/Siena survey also found the economy and cost of living among voters’ major concerns.
How much longer is Trump in office?
Trump served his first term as president from Jan. 20, 2017, to Jan. 20, 2021. He returned to the White House for a second term on Jan. 20, 2025, which is set to end Jan. 20, 2029.
Can Trump run for president in 2028?
Under the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Trump cannot be elected to a third presidential term in 2028.
The amendment states that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Trump was elected president in 2016 and again in 2024, meaning he has reached the constitutional limit of two presidential elections.
The amendment does not distinguish between consecutive and nonconsecutive terms.
