A new dining option is coming to El Paso's East Side.
Whataburger was founded by Harmon Dobson in 1950 as a burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas. The first Whataburger outside of Texas opened in 1959 in Pensacola, Florida.
Today, there are nearly 1,200 Whataburger locations across the country. While the vast majority are located in Texas, the franchise has also set up shop in 17 states, including Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, Alabama,
Arkansas and Missouri.
Where is it?
The new Whataburger will be located at 12347 Pellicano Drive in East El Paso, according to the city's permit and licensing page.
The new Whataburger is across the street from a Speedway gas station and just down from a McDonald's and a Mister Car Wash location. Nearby are Flix Brewhouse, Bee's Pastry Cafe and Pop's Pizza.
What was there before?
The new Whataburger is being built atop a currently vacant lot not far from Joe Battle Boulevard.
Plans call for construction of a new, ground-up Whataburger establishment with a drive-thru window.
Who is the contractor?
The city's site does not list the contractor for the project, but the applicant is Jeff Smith of Rouch Architects in Dallas, Texas. The owner is listed as EPT Monteverde LLC and Cavalier Pellicano LLC of El Paso.
The project is valued at $1.9 million.
