There are less than two months till voters elect the next governor of Texas, and a new poll has the race between Gov. Greg Abbott and Gina Hinojosa as a tie.
A new N+ Univision/YouGov poll released Sept. 9 shows the race for Texas Governor is tied at 47%-47%, as Hinojosa continues to gain ground on Abbott despite being outspent ten to one. This is the latest good news for the Hinojosa camp as this follows seven consecutive polls showing the race in a statistical tie, reflecting Hinojosa’s momentum as she travels the state, connecting with Texas voters across the aisle who are ready for change.
"We're building real momentum in this race because Texans want change. I am running to secure the American Dream in Texas by saving our public schools and
putting money in your pocket with an economy built for the people, not billionaires,” Hinojosa said following the announcement of the latest data.
Other key findings include:
- Hinojosa has a +13-favorability rating, while Abbott is underwater by -3 points
- She is leading among Latino voters by 12 points, 54-42, a key constituency needed to win.
- The Democratic candidate is also up 19 points with Independents, up 20 points with moderates, and up 9 points with both conservatives and former 2024 Trump voters.
Abbott also sought to bolster his numbers when he spoke Sept. 10 during the second and final evening of the Republican Midterm Convention at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
President Donald Trump was the keynote speaker the previous night, delivering a 74-minute address aimed at energizing the GOP base ahead of November's competitive midterm elections. Trump focused heavily on turning the midterms into a referendum on his presidency and urged supporters to vote as if his own name were on the ballot, saying, "please pretend that I'm running."
A significant portion of the speech targeted inflation, particularly the cost of groceries and eggs. Trump said sweeping tariffs and increased energy production would drive prices down.
Important dates for 2026 Texas election
The last day to register to vote for the General Election is Oct. 5, either online, by mail, or in person.
Early voting starts Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 30. The absentee ballot request deadline is Oct. 23 for mail requests or Oct. 19 for in-person requests. The absentee ballot return deadline is Nov. 3, by mail or in person on Election Day.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
