School is almost in session, but a recent report shows that Texas isn't leading the class in education.
A WalletHub study from July 20 compared each state's school system in more than 30 factors, including academic outcomes, funding, safety, class size and test scores. Texas ranked 32nd in the nation in the study.
The top-ranked states are along the East Coast, with Massachusetts coming in at No. 1.
Texas also came in the bottom half in a few other categories, tying with Idaho for the 40th-highest percentage of high school students who reported being threatened or injured and placing 46th per-student spending for public elementary and secondary schools
Texas ranked No. 17 in school safety, its strongest showing among the categories.
New Mexico ranked
last among the 50 states and Washington, D.C., at No. 51.

When does school start in Texas?
That depends on your local school district.
For cities like El Paso, some schools start in a couple of days on Aug. 3, but up in Lubbock, some schools start on Aug. 19. Here's a look at when major school districts start in Texas:
- Fort Worth ISD — Aug. 10.
- Houston ISD — Aug. 10.
- Dallas ISD — Aug. 11.
- San Antonio ISD — Aug. 12.
- Austin ISD — Aug. 18.
