YOKOSUKA, Japan — When Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Noelia Granados left El Paso, Texas, to join the U.S. Navy, she hoped to challenge herself and discover what she was capable of. Six years later, Granados says the experience has provided far more than a career—it has given confidence, purpose and a second family.
Assigned to Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Yokosuka, Granados supports logistics operations throughout the Pacific while serving alongside sailors from across the country and around the world.
Granados’s excitement about serving in a country like Japan is one of the biggest reasons she loves wearing the uniform.
Rather than following the traditional path of attending college immediately after graduating
from El Dorado High School in 2019, Granados chose a different challenge.
“I wanted to challenge myself,” Granados said. “I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, become more independent and build the confidence and life skills that would prepare me for my future.”
Granados’s decision was inspired by the sacrifices her parents made while raising their family.
“My parents built a life for us from very little,” Granados said. “Everything they sacrificed motivated me to work hard and build something that would make them proud.”
As the oldest daughter, Granados said she understands that her siblings are watching her example.
“Knowing my brother and my little sister look up to me makes me proud,” Granados said.
Growing up in El Paso shaped the way she approaches relationships in the Navy. She recalled the unity her hometown displayed following the 2019 El Paso mass shooting and said that sense of community inspired her to always check on her shipmates, encourage them and make sure no one feels alone.
Serving overseas also broadened her perspective. Standing at Tokyo's famous Shibuya Crossing reminded her of the many opportunities military service had provided and how fortunate she was to experience another culture.
Professionally, one of her proudest accomplishments was coordinating logistics planning for a ship as a junior sailor while working alongside first-class and chief petty officers. The experience strengthened her confidence as a leader.
For Granados, the greatest reward has been the people she has met.
“The Navy changed me into a completely different person,” Granados said. “I've grown so much, and everywhere I've been I've found another family.”
She said her Navy family constantly checks on one another, offers positive encouragement during difficult times and celebrates each other's successes.
“I know I can rely on my Navy family,” Granados said. “They're always there to support me, keep me positive and remind me that I'm never alone.”
Granados thanked her parents and especially her younger sister for their constant encouragement and support.
NAVSUP FLC Yokosuka is the Western Pacific's largest U.S. Navy logistics command. From its headquarters near Truman Bay, approximately 26 miles (41 kilometers) south of Tokyo, the command oversees a network of more than 20 detachments and sites stretching from Misawa, Japan, to Stirling, Australia, and from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to Guam. Together, these locations provide logistics support to the Navy, Marine Corps and other Department of Defense and federal activities within the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.
Naval Supply Systems Command, headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, employs more than 22,500 military and civilian personnel who provide supply, acquisition and logistics support to the Navy and joint forces worldwide.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber-optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
