President Donald Trump is doubling down on his promise to send $5,000 checks if Republicans retain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
In anOct. 4 Truth Social post, Trump shared a video saying he will give all adult citizens in the United States a total of $5,000 if Republicans stay in power in the 2026 midterm elections.
"Our country is doing well under Republican leadership that only I can make you this promise," Trump said.
Trump said the country is bringing in “massive amounts of money” through tariffs and pointed to what he described as the nation’s economic success as a reason the payments could be made.
Trump also warned that the economy would suffer if Democrats won control of Congress and said sending out the checks
would be a "very easy thing to do for me."
“It will be a 1929 disaster if they get in,” Trump said, predicting an economic depression similar to the one that began with the 1929 stock market crash. "You will have an economic depression much like 1929."
Trump first promised a $5,000 payment during the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas on Sept. 9, describing the payment as a dividend tied to the country's economic performance.
The promise follows a similar proposal he made in late 2025 to provide Americans with $2,000 tariff dividend checks. Trump had said that the $2,000 payments would be sent out to Americans, "probably in the middle of next year (2026)."
Trump also mentioned that he had sent a "Warrior Dividend" to service members in the amount of when the nation was founded — $1,776. Nearly 1.5 million service members are expected to receive a one-time bonus ahead of the Christmas holiday in 2025.
The funds covering the "Warrior Dividends" were originally intended to boost the Basic Allowance for Housing, which helps service members pay for off-post housing costs, the Pentagon said.
