Speed and alcohol are suspected of possibly being factors in a collision between two pickup trucks that killed three people at a West Side intersection, El Paso police officials said.
The three deaths were among five traffic-related fatalities on El Paso's streets in what was an uncommonly deadly weekend Oct. 2-3.
The three people killed in the collision were identified by police as Edgar Dominguez, 57, and Velsa Dominguez, 56, who were in a maroon-colored truck, and Rafael Mendoza, 49, who was a passenger in a white truck, a news release by El Paso Police Department spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo stated.
The deadly collision occurred about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, at the intersection of Redd Road and Southwestern Drive by the Redd Pointe
retail center, police said.
Edgar Dominguez was driving a maroon 2020 GMC Sierra north on Southwestern Drive with Velsa Dominguez as his passenger, police said.
A white 2020 Ford F250 driven by Andres De Lucio Tinico, 49, was heading eastbound on Redd Road. Mendoza was a passenger in the Ford.
Both trucks collided at the intersection, and the impact caused the GMC Sierra to crash into a traffic pole, police said. Edgar and Velsa Dominguez in the maroon truck, along with Mendoza in the white truck, died.
An investigation by the Special Traffic Investigations Unit continues. Investigators have not disclosed which driver may have been at fault, but suspect speed and alcohol were factors in the collision, police said.
