Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton will not be getting any campaign support from outgoing U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.
Following the March Republican primary election, Paxton and Cornyn went head-to-head in a May runoff, which Paxton won by a wide margin. Paxton is now set to face Democrat James Talarico in the Nov. 3 General Election.
In a brief interview with CNN posted to X, Cornyn said he had no plans to support Paxton's campaign with less than six weeks to go before the General Election "for all the reasons we pointed out in the primary."
"I think the risk for Republicans is, if we nominate flawed candidates in November, we risk losing," he said in the interview. "And we haven't elected a Democrat in Texas statewide since … before
1994. And this is the way majority parties become minority parties, by nominating candidates that are less than appealing to a General Election electorate."
When asked if Paxton deserves to be a senator, Cornyn responded that he would "let the voters decide."
Cornyn's comments come as polls continue to show Talarico leading in the final weeks of the General Election campaign.
