A mechanical failure on a thrill ride at Western Playland caused a scare after a cable snapped while two people were on the attraction, according to a video posted across social media.
The incident occurred on the park's Southwest Slinger ride, a slingshot-style attraction that launches riders into the air using high-tension cables. Video from the scene appears to show one of the cables broken while the ride was suspended above the ground.
Footage circulating online shows two riders exiting the attraction after the malfunction. A man can be seen comforting a woman near the ride, though it was not immediately clear whether either person was injured. Authorities and park officials had not released information about possible injuries late Friday.
The cause of the apparent malfunction was not immediately known. It was also unclear whether the ride would remain closed pending an inspection or investigation.
Western Playland, located in Sunland Park near the Texas-New Mexico state line, had not publicly released additional information about the incident as of late Friday.
The El Paso Times contacted Western Playland seeking information about the incident, including whether anyone was injured and what may have caused the apparent malfunction. The park had not responded to requests for comment as of publication.
