The Vinton Steel minimill's $255 million expansion is underway.
A giant steel structure and concrete columns are rising in the yard of the 64-year-old facility located on 230 acres in El Paso County's Upper Valley. It's easily seen along Interstate 10, near Vinton Road.
Officials with Japan's Kyoei Steel Group, owner of the minimill for nine years, took part in a groundbreaking ceremony in August 2025. But work didn't start until months later.
The expansion project will add a new furnace and new structures to the facility, an important economic driver not only for the tiny village of Vinton, an El Paso suburb, but also for the entire area.
The minimill turns old motor vehicles, discarded major appliances, and industrial scrap into new steel products
– steel rebar for housing/commercial construction and steel balls for copper mining.
