The state of Florida has rolled out newly redesigned drivers’ licenses and ID cards.
The new design is sleek, secure and steeped in Sunshine State history.
The new cards feature iconic imagery like manatees,
oranges, alligators, Castillo de San Marcos and even a nod to our space program and historic mottos on the back.
Each card also has a color-coded header and enhanced security features to help law enforcement and businesses verify credentials with greater ease and better combat fraud.
All of this makes for great news and plenty of curiosity.

However, one critical message needs to be shouted from the rooftops: You do not need to rush out and replace your current license or ID.
A new look does not make your existing card obsolete.
If you open your wallet right now and find a valid license or ID, that card remains 100% legal, valid and recognized everywhere until the expiration date printed on the front.
The Sarasota County Tax Collector’s Office will issue the new design as current cards expire – or if you move, change a name or require a replacement.
The older cards will simply be phased out over time in the normal course of renewals.
There is no deadline to swap out a valid card and no penalty for carrying the prior design.
Our normal process of renewing and updating credentials remains virtually unchanged, with standard, state-mandated documentation requirements staying in place.
Non-citizen applicants should note that specific INS documentation and U.S. VISA verification may be required when establishing legal status.
We take immense pride in providing secure, modern credentials that represent our state and keep your identity safe.
Again, it is totally fine to keep your current card it in your wallet.

We look forward to seeing you when it comes time to renew, and we will have you on your way with your newly redesigned card.
