Michael Frasure has unfinished business at the FHSAA state golf tournament and an elusive record that drives him every time he plays a match for Montverde Academy.
Frasure, a standout sophomore, helped the Eagles qualify for the Class 1A state championship in 2025 by sinking a dramatic 20-foot putt during a playoff round at the regional tournament.
Unfortunately, a back injury suffered during a practice round between the regional and state tournaments forced him to withdraw after the first day of the FHSAA Finals.
Almost a year later, Frasure still wonders what could have been for him and his team. Montverde finished fourth in Class 1A in 2025.
“(I think about it) a lot. Probably every time we have a high school match,” Frasure said. “Where is this going to end up? It’s going to end up at the final stage of states. Sometimes it just pops up. I have to remind myself that I’ll have future opportunities.”
Fraser, who started playing golf shortly before his seventh birthday, has been a member of the Eagles team since sixth grade.
Last year was his first opportunity to represent the Eagles at the state tournament.
“That was the first time we ever made it to states as a team since I was on the team,” he said. “I really wanted to play because we had a great team last year. But I have three more years. I feel pretty confident either I can or the team can get there in the next three years. I wasn’t happy.”
Frasure is coming off an outstanding summer, headlined by a one-stroke win at Florida State Golf Association Boys’ Junior Championship (13-15 Division) in July.
Frasure, who doesn’t like to look at the leader board, didn’t even know he was winning until his third and final round was over.
“I was just out there playing my game,” he said. “I didn’t think I was anywhere near the lead. … I play the best I can and hope I’m up there.”
Frasure is aiming to be at his best this season and is hoping to break his own school record for best nine-hole score.
“Every single time we have a match, that’s the goal,” Frasure said. “I try to break the old record.”
Frasure carded a 6-under-par 30 at Bella Collina Golf Club in Montverde early last season. If he is to break the school record, he thinks it will be on the same course.
“I’ve played there for five years,” he said. “I have a feel for the course. That’s kind of my course. That’s where I’m going for that 7-under number.”
