A 68-year-old Sarasota man was hospitalized in serious condition after a possible medical episode led to a crash involving an unoccupied U.S. Postal Service vehicle Tuesday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 9:22 a.m. Sept. 22 on Swift Road, north of Wilkinson Road in Sarasota County.
The man was driving a Nissan Sentra south in the right lane when he experienced a possible medical episode, FHP said. The front of the Nissan then struck the rear of the postal vehicle, which was stopped partially in the right lane and partially on the sidewalk in front of 4366 Swift Road.
The postal vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders transported the Sarasota man to an area hospital as a trauma
alert. FHP reported that he was in serious condition.

In related news, seven people reported injuries after a Breeze bus collided with another vehicle and struck a State College of Florida sign in south Sarasota County on Sept. 21, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened at the college’s entrance at 8000 S. Tamiami Trail.
Three people were taken to Wellen Park ER and one to Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Venice campus, according to an 11:22 a.m. update from the Sheriff’s Office.
