A 51-year-old man died after a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon near Gulfstream Avenue and Bayfront Drive in downtown Sarasota, police said.
The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. Sept. 27 as the Venice man rode south out of the traffic circle onto Bayfront Drive.
Investigators believe he attempted to pass a vehicle, struck it and then crashed into a pole, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
His motorcycle then entered the roadway, causing a second motorcyclist to crash. The second rider, an adult man, was not injured, police said.
The Venice man was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he later died. Police have not released his name.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Neither that driver nor
the second motorcyclist faces charges, police said.
Traffic was diverted around the intersection for several hours during the investigation. All lanes have reopened.
