Behind the story: Michaela Galligan on Florida's property tax vote

Herald-Tribune intern staff writer Michaela Galligan's cover story for the Aug. 2 Herald-Tribune – titled "Sarasota County braces for impact of Florida property tax change vote – takes a masterful look at the possible consequences for local communities if Floridians vote on Nov. 3 to approve an amendment to change the state's property tax system.

Here's our Q-and-A with Michaela, who covers a variety of topics for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Q. How did you approach this story, and what guided your process in reporting it?

I approached this story through a combination of personal research and interviewing those who have expertise on the topic. County and city governments were able to provide numbers and information on how they would be impacted

by the amendment, and state Rep. Danny Nix Jr. gave interesting insight as to why he voted to advance it in the Legislature.

Since this amendment covers a lot of ground and affects many different things, breaking it down into sections made reporting on it much more understandable and manageable.

Q.  What are the biggest lessons you want readers to take away from your story?

I would say the biggest lesson I would want readers to take away from this story is to always consider the full picture.

This amendment, like most things, holds both positives and negatives. So before you cast a vote on it in November, it's important to research and understand what this would entail for you – both personally and for your community.

Q. What’s the next potential chapter in this story?

There could be many potential next chapters in this story.

As we get closer to Election Day, we may see grassroots campaigns for and against the amendment, and looking into the policies each of those groups supports could make for a very interesting story.

Of course, there is also a story to come based on the results of the election and whether or not the amendment passes. But there is still a long road to November, and lots to report on till then!
