An award-winning beachfront restaurant on Anna Maria Island has reopened after a two-year closure caused by damage sustained from Hurricane Helene.
Beach Bistro, a fine-dining restaurant situated on Holmes Beach that overlooks the Gulf, reopened this month, welcoming back regulars and visitors "as a beloved island tradition begins its next chapter." The bistro boasts decades of history and myriad accolades, offering upscale dining right on the sugary white sands of Holmes Beach or indoors, inside a quaint waterfront cottage.
One of the owners of Beach Bistro told the Herald-Tribune in an email that the landmark restaurant had reopened, with an announcement to customers appearing on the website. Steven Sipos, manager of Beach Bistro, said the restaurant reopened Sept.
25 and resumed regular daily dining hours of 4 to 10 p.m.
The restaurant has been closed since September 2024, when storm surge flooding from Hurricane Helene devastated Anna Maria Island, including the fine-dining staple located right on the waterfront. As owners previously promised on social media, the iconic island space at 6600 Gulf Drive reopened almost two years later to the day.
"After two years away, we can’t wait to serve you again — beautiful food, a table beside the Gulf, and the sunset we’ve all missed," restaurant management wrote on social media.
Sipos said that "the entire interior of the restaurant was affected" by the back-to-back hurricanes in 2024, leading to the entirety of the interior and kitchen needing to be rebuilt. Though he declined to share how much the restoration cost, he said the ownership partners made a "significant personal investment" to repair the building.
"The reopening means the Beach Bistro will continue to be a part of peoples' lives and the fondest of their memories for decades to come as it was before," Sipos said. "It’s a special place for sure for just a last-minute nightly meal with family and friends, a romantic occasion, and all special and business occasions."
The signature wood-paneled feel of the restaurant was preserved, and the designers added white marble, brass and antique glass mirrors throughout the space. The restoration process also included installation of the "highest-rated" impact windows and doors that should ensure the water-right nature of the restaurant, Sipos added.
In terms of staffing, Sipos said that roughly six to eight long-term employees returned to the refurbished restaurant and more than 10 new hires were brought onto the team. Meanwhile, he added that management is still seeking talent for the kitchen and front of house.
Beach Bistro also welcomed an award-winning consultant and classically trained chef from San Diego, California, to help bring the original back to life and enhance it with to fresh options. Sipos said that the restaurant "committed a big piece of the budget to this to have the Beach Bistro back but be even better."
Menu classics include Lobstercargots, coconut and cashew-covered fresh grouper, and the famed bouillabaisse featuring poached-to-order lobster tails, jumbo shrimp, market fish, shellfish and octopus. Other signature dishes include prime beef filet mignon, double lamb chop, duck confit and our crafted vegetarian options.
The menu includes all of the formerly loved favorites with some new additions that focus "more intently on whole food ingredients that grow naturally on Earth, making almost every item in-house, from scratch," Sipos added.
As stated on Beach Bistro's website, the local establishment use shrimp only caught directly from the Gulf, with line-caught fresh fish sourced directly from people that management has worked with for years.
History of Beach Bistro
Beach Bistro was first being founded in 1985 by husband-and-wife duo Sean Murphy and Susan Timmins. The restaurant sold in early 2022 to a group led by local developer Shawn Kaleta, with local attorney Louis Najmy, of Lakewood Ranch-based firm Najmy Thompson, being one of the co-owners.
"We have a long history, a great tradition, of incredibly talented culinarians. We feel strongly that the great team running the Bistro now is one of our finest," former owners Murphy and Timmins said in a statement emailed to customers in 2022. "Which is why we feel it is the right time for us to step aside, and to take pleasure in watching this special little place continue to soar without us."
The Anna Maria Island fine-dining icon has been named one of the most famous beachfront restaurants and has been inducted into the Florida Trend's Golden Spoon Hall of Fame. Beach Bistro has also received glowing reviews in The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Beach Bistro was also the lone Sarasota-Manatee location to make this publication's USA Today Network list of best beachfront restaurants in Florida in 2021.
