One of Sarasota’s most anticipated restaurant openings has hit a delay amid parking issues, questions about ownership and concerns from nearby residents.
1000 North, the exclusive private club and restaurant co-founded by basketball icon Michael Jordan, was slated to open by October on North Tamiami Trail in downtown Sarasota’s Rosemary District. But the Sarasota Planning Board voted Wednesday to delay a decision on the project after reviewing a revised plan and hearing concerns from residents.
The members-only club would occupy two commercial condominium units in The BLVD Sarasota, according to city planning documents.
The board voted unanimously at the Sept. 9 meeting to push back the discussion “to a date uncertain.” The project was previously
deferred at the Planning Board public hearing on Aug. 19, citing several errors in some of the forms in the original submission of the applications, including an incorrect number of parking spaces and typographical errors in ownership information.
Concerns about the development included a lack of parking, disruption of residents and blocking the pedestrian walkway along the exterior of the building.
The application received full Development Review Committee sign off on June 10, but the project needed Site Plan and Minor Conditional Use approval from the planning board to establish private club use.
What is 1000 North?
Theprivate club and fine dining restaurant 1000 North first opened in Palm Beach County in 2018, with founding partners that included Jordan, golfer Ernie Els, former New York Giant Tucker Frederickson and Wine Spectator magazine publisher Marvin Shanken.
Later partners listed on 1000 North’s website include tennis legend Serena Williams and former “Real Sports” host Bryant Gumbel.
1000 North would span two levels and 23,000 square feet, with private dining rooms, a dedicated wine lounge, members’ wine and liquor lockers, and an upstairs lounge. The menu would feature prime steaks, seafood and seasonal ingredients, complemented by selections curated by sommeliers.
Previous Herald-Tribune reporting identified developer Kevin Daves, who was also behind The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, and The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, as part of the team bringing 1000 North to Sarasota.
