A Thousand Oaks man pleaded guilty Sept. 15 in a Ventura courtroom to crimes stemming from a home burglary in which a $300,000 heirloom ring was taken along with other jewelry and electronics.
In addition to charges for felony first-degree residential burglary, Carlos Omar Donis Arroyo, 35, also admitted to a special allegation that the crime involved taking something of great monetary value, according to Ventura County Superior Court records. He previously pleaded not guilty on Sept. 3.
Donis Arroyo entered the home in the 2100 block of East Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks July 26, according to a Ventura County Sheriff’s Office news release. The sheriff's office is contracted to provide police services to the city.
Deputies responded to the home
and found that someone had entered through an unlocked window and stole electronics and several pieces of jewelry, including the ring passed down through multiple generations, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators were able to identify Donis Arroyo as the suspect after obtaining evidence at the scene and exectuing search warrants, the sheriff’s office said.
On Sept. 1, the sheriff’s office searched the man's home and found a majority of the stolen items, including the heirloom ring, said Detective Brian Kuroda. The Thousand Oaks man was not at home during the search but returned while deputies were still there, Kuroda said.
He was arrested and booked into Ventura County jail with bail set at $50,000, jail records show. He remains in jail as of Sept. 23.
