A Los Angeles man and woman accused of theft from the Camarillo Target were arrested Aug. 21 after they returned to the retail store a month after a previous alleged criminal visit, authorities said.
Each has pleaded not guilty to charges of felony grand theft and related felony special allegations in Ventura County Superior Court Aug. 25, according to court records.
The man, 60, and woman, 64, were released from Ventura County jail after their Aug. 25 court appearance and are slated to return to court for a Sept. 3 hearing. The two have also been ordered to stay away from all Target stores in Ventura County, court records show.
Deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff's office in Camarillo were called to the Target on West Ventura Boulevard July
27 on a report of a theft, according to a sheriff's news release. Two people had left the store with a full shopping cart without paying.
The pair departed before deputies arrived, but investigators used surveillance video to get a description of them and their vehicle.
Detectives used that information with an automated license plate reader feature that alerted deputies when the vehicle returned to Camarillo Aug. 21, sheriff's officials said. Deputies worked with Target's loss prevention team members to identify the pair who are accused of committing additional thefts that day.
After the man and woman fled, they were pulled over and arrested, sheriff's deputies said. Detectives searched their vehicle and found $1,500 in stolen merchandise, a small quantity of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to the news release.
Sheriff's photos from the arrest show a variety of items, including laundry detergent, cleaning products, diapers and energy drinks. Detectives said in the news release they believe the alleged theives took the goods to resell them.
