Kelechi Ofoego rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries as Hueneme ran away from host Channel Islands, 47-7, at Benefield Stadium on Friday, Sept. 19.
The Vikings scored 40 unanswered points to retain the Seabees Challenge Trophy for the fourth straight meeting, dating back to 2019.
“It was definitely a great atmosphere,” Hueneme head coach Alex Morfin said. “Both sides were energized. The stands were full. There was a lot of alumni out. It was a great night for the community of south Oxnard.”
Alex Bravo completed 12 of 13 passes for 150 yards and TDs to Joe Lopez and Carlos Flores as Hueneme (1-4) earned its first win of the season.
“We had a plan and we stuck to the plan,” Morfin said. “The plan worked.”
With injuries affecting
both of its lines, Hueneme needed three players to play both ways up front. Morfin credited Alexander Gomez, Issaac Ebberson and Andre Hernandez for their efforts.
“I’m really proud of our trenches for digging deep and finding a way to win the battle,” Morfin said.
A touchdown run by senior Roman Delgado pulled Channel Islands (0-5) even 7-7 in the first quarter.
“The first half was awesome,” Channel Islands head coach Jeremiah Valoaga said. “We just came out flat in the second half.”
After a bye week, Hueneme will open Tri-County League play on Oct. 2 against Dos Pueblos. Channel Islands will host Carpinteria to open Citrus Coast League play on Oct. 2.
Simi Valley 49, Palmdale 7
Evan Porhola recovered his blocked punt in the end zone for a TD and Wyatt Ruiz returned an interception 40 yards for a TD as the Pioneers rolled on the road to their fourth straight win.
“We jumped all over them,” Simi Valley coach Jim Benkert said. “We were ready to play.”
Connor Petrov completed 10 of 11 passes for 187 yards and four TDs, Sal Villa ran for 56 yards and a TD on six carries, and Micah Hannah caught four passes for 64 yards and two TDs for Simi Valley, which built a 42-0 halftime lead.
Simi Valley (4-1) will visit St. Bonaventure in its Marmonte League opener on Oct. 2.
Royal 42, Del Sol 13
Down 13-7 in the third quarter, the Royal scored 35 unanswered points to improve to 4-0.
Quarterback Preston Murray completed 6 of 7 passes for 172 yards and two TDs. Josh Garcia caught TD passes of 86 and 52 yards. Landon Murray had a 61-yard TD run. Landon Shaffer, Michael Toole and Chase Sandlin also ran for scores.
“It started out rough,” said Royal interim head coach Cody MacArthur, “but we came out at halftime and did what we needed to do.”
Del Sol struggled to defend the Highlanders’ Wing-T offense.
“Super old-school,” said Del Sol head coach James Nelson. “If you’re not in the right gap, it’s a 75-yard touchdown. That’s pretty much what happened.”
Hector Villaseñor had a 65-yard TD run, Isaiah Flores had a 25-yard TD run and Anthony Hernandez had a fumble recovery for Del Sol (1-4), which opens Citrus Coast League play at Nordhoff on Oct. 2.
Royal hosts Glendale this Friday in a nonleague game.
Newbury Park 21, Muir 18
Aiden Tasci hit Caleb Perry with scoring strikes of 78 and 22 yards and Brodie Scheinberg threw a TD pass as the Panthers improved to 3-2.
Tyler Stomsoe rushed for 88 yards on 22 carries for Newbury Park, which opens Marmonte League play against visiting Bishop Diego on Oct. 2.
Moorpark 44, Elk Grove 28
Even 14-14 in the first half, the Musketeers scored 23 straight points to pull away on the road in south Sacramento.
Blake Davidson’s punt return for a score was the big play for Moorpark (4-1), which will open Channel League play Oct. 2 at Santa Barbara.
Dawson Armstrong completed 14 of 20 passes for 155 yards and two TDs and ran for a score.
“He put together a really good game,” said Moorpark coach Christian Dearborn.
Brody Tweedy rushed for 95 yards and two TDs on 16 carries and Colby Cronquist and Jake Vollmer caught TD passes.
Agoura 35, Heritage Christian 7
Host Heritage Christian held the ball for 18 minutes of the first half’s 24 minutes, but the big-play Chargers still led 21-7 at the break.
“They played keep away,” Agoura coach Dustin Croick said. “We played well, but we didn’t have the ball much.”
George Hastings ran for 110 yards and two TDs on seven carries and caught four passes for 32 yards and a score as Agoura prevailed on the road in Northridge.
In his first full game after returning from injury, Gavin Pulisic caught five passes for 157 yards and a TD. Quarterback Kris Carranza completed 12 of 16 passes for 215 yard and three TDs.
Will Gelt had 10 tackles, three tackles for a loss and two sacks to lead the defense.
Agoura (4-1) will open Coastal 101 League play with a game at Buena on Oct. 2.
Fillmore 48, Carpinteria 0
Andrew Estrada returned punts 78 and 70 yards for TDs as the host Flashes extended their winning streak to three games.
“He is just incredible,” said Fillmore head coach Charlie Weis of Estrada.
Nate Perez completed 11 of 13 passes for 235 yards and three TDs and Saul Fraga caught five passes for 101 yards and a TD for Fillmore (3-2), which will open Tri-County League play Oct. 2 at San Marcos.
“It was a good complete game from top to bottom,” said Weis.
Micah Harm and Efrain Arenas ran for TDs and Stephen Torres and Matthew Zavala caught TD passes for the Flashes.
Nordhoff 41, Beverly Hills 13
Michael Dennie threw for four TDs and ran for another as the unbeaten Rangers scored 41 straight points after falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter.
“We started out pretty flat,” said Nordhoff coach. “We had a good amount of guys out.”
Dennie completed 8 of 14 passes for 131 yards and ran for another 82 yards. Jonathan Verduzco and Cooper Cole caught two TD passes apiece.
Bret Winters rushed for 159 yards on 12 carries for Nordhoff (5-0), which will open Citrus Coast League play Oct. 2 at Del Sol.
Santa Paula 37, Little Rock 0
Quarterback Rene Vega threw TD passes to Malachi Alfaro and Alvaro Adame and also rushed for 80 yards on just three carries, and Dominic Alcantar ran for 80 yards and a score as the host Cardinals improved to 3-2 with their first shutout of the season.
Santa Paula opens Citrus Coast League play at Royal on Oct. 2.
Tustin 28, Westlake 21
The Warriors saw their 14-game regular-season winning streak snapped, despite three touchdown passes from freshman Hendrix Tucker to senior Erik Green.
“They were pretty big,” said Westlake head coach Rick Clausen of Tustin. “They were a problem up front definitely on both sides of the ball. … We haven’t seen a team like that in a very long time.”
Playing without starting quarterback Ford Green, Westlake led 14-3 in the first half.
“We got off to a hot start,” Clausen said. “The first quarter was really good for us. Then they started to lean on us a little more.”
Green also intercepted a pass for Westlake (4-1), which will open Channel League play Oct. 2 at Rio Mesa.
Serra 41, Oaks Christian 0
AJ McBean ran for 144 yards and two TDs on 10 carries as host Serra shut out the winless Lions in Gardena.
Freshman quarterback Cody Bird completed 13 of 27 passes for 89 yards and Aidan Crecion had five catches for 64 yards for Oaks Christian. Hayden Kennington had 10 tackles and Alifeleti Tuihalamaka had two tackles for a loss.
Oaks Christian (0-5) opens Marmonte League play Oct. 2 at Pacifica.
Western Christian 56, Grace 47
The Lancers piled up 350 yards and six TD on the ground, but let leads of 28-7 and 41-28 slip away against 5-0 Western Christian.
The Upland school has won its last 15 regular-season games.
Grace coach Tom Coate was proud of his team, which was depleted by injury at running back and linebacker.
“We just went toe to toe with a Division 5 team,” Coate said. “That was one of the ages.”
Charlie Martinez had 234 yards from scrimmage and three TDs, running for 115 yards and two TDs on 11 carries and catching six passes for 119 yards and a TD.
Riley Williams ran for 68 yards and three TDs and Landon LaSecla rushed for 167 yards and a TD on 15 carries.
Williams also completed 12 of 21 yards for 167 yards and a TD.
“We were the little guy punching up,” said Coate. “We thought we’d learn a little bit. … But our boys played hard. They had no quit. We’ve got tough kids.”
Grace (3-2) opens Citrus Coast League play with a game at Santa Clara on Oct. 2.
Lancaster 48, Thousand Oaks 7
Trevor Kochel returned a kickoff 51 yards for a TD for Thousand Oaks (1-4) in the road loss.
The Lancers open Channel League play Oct. 2 by hosting Ventura.
Crespi 40, Oak Park 0
Host Crespi opened up a 21-0 lead in the first half and handed Oak Park its first loss.
The Eagles (4-1), who open Coastal 101 League play Oct. 2 against Calabasas, hadn’t been shut out in nearly three years.
Duarte 15, Santa Clara 14
Rudy Cerna threw two TD passes to Collin Forty, but the host Saints saw their four-game winning streak snapped late.
Santa Clara (4-1) will open Citrus Coast League play Oct. 2 at home against Grace.
