Todd Therrien, the only two-time state champion head football coach in Ventura County history, died on Sept. 30.
Therrien, 47, who led St. Bonaventure to CIF-State championships in 2007 and 2008, succumbed from complications related to a recent stroke, according to his father Bill.
He had been in a quadriplegic state since suffering a devastating spinal cord injury in a car accident in Clovis in May 2022.
A linebacker and offensive guard on St. Bonaventure’s 1996 CIF-Southern Section Division X championship team, Therrien became an indispensable part of the coaching staff that went to nine CIF-SS title games in a 10-year span from 1999 to 2008, winning eight championships.
Succeeding Jon Mack as head coach in 2007, Therrien immediately coached the
Seraphs to consecutive CIF-State Division III championships.
The Star spoke to Therrien in a rehabilitation facility in Chatsworth in 2023. He said he thought about his St. Bonaventure teams “every day.”
“The ‘08 team was one of my favorite teams,” Therrien said. “I thought they were right there with (St. Bonaventure’s) ’01 team.”
St. Bonaventure beat Modesto-Central Catholic 35-21 in 2007 and Santa Rosa-Cardinal Newman 28-6 in 2008.
“Just so many good players who worked so hard,” Therrien said. “They helped us go back to back. That was something no one had done until us.”
