Has the next great Ventura County distance runner announced himself?
Over the final mile of the Rob Brenner Championship race at the 47th Clovis Invitational on Oct. 10, Rio Mesa High star Derek Luna surged ahead of the pack en route to victory in 14 minutes, 30 seconds.
The senior's performance at the prestigious invitational ranked fifth in meet history and made him the seventh-fastest racer ever at Woodward Park, which also serves as the state meet course. It was the fastest time over 5,000 meters in California this season.
“I was definitely shocked to see what I ran when I crossed the line,” Luna said. “I am still processing it.”

Shoulder to shoulder with Elias Thronson of Davis and Garrett Faught of Crater with half -mile to go and sensing
that a massive personal best might be in the cards, Lunar took his shot.
“I just decided to go,” Luna said. “I always feel like there are people right on me — I try to envision that to make myself go faster.”
No one came close.
Luna's closing speed over a blazing 4:31.9 final mile gapped runner-up Thronson by more than five seconds.

Luna joined Newbury Park High greats Nico Young (14:29), Lex Young (14:28), Colin Sahlman (14:27) and Leo Young (14:26) on the all-time course leaderboard with the big run, and became the fastest runner from the West Ventura County on the state meet course. Ventura’s Anthony Fasthorse (14:33) is also in the all-time top 10.
It was the first time since 2023 that a California runner won the boys title race at Clovis.
Luna’s breakout run came just days after he broke the record on the Ventura County Championships course at Lake Casitas and committed to run for his dream school, Yale, next fall.
