An Oxnard man was arrested on Oct. 2 after barricading himself inside his home, prompting a response from police and SWAT.
Officers with the Oxnard Police Department responded to the family dispute at a house
in the 500 block of Magnolia Avenue around 2:27 p.m., according to a department news release.
The man’s relatives exited the home and approached an officer, police said. The 45-year-old Oxnard man then appeared behind a closed gate holding a box cutter and allegedly threatened the officer with it.
The relatives were moved to a safe location, officials said. Police also learned that the Oxnard man had allegedly assaulted one of his relatives during the family dispute.
The man barricaded himself inside with an elderly relative immobile inside as more officers arrived, police said. He also reportedly threatened to kill officers if they approached.
Several units were dispatched to assist with the incident, including the police department’s SWAT team and crisis negotiations team.
Police were able to evacuate the elderly relative from a second-story window with the help of the Oxnard Fire Department, police said.
After an hours-long standoff, SWAT deployed chemical agents to flush the man out of his home, officials said. He was taken to a local hospital and medically cleared.
The Oxnard man was arrested on suspicion of felonies for exhibiting a deadly weapon to police officers to resist arrest and resisting an executive officer, as well as two misdemeanor counts of battery on a person and a misdemeanor for resisting, obstructing, delaying of a peace officer or EMT, jail records show.
He was booked into Ventura County jail with bail set at $50,000 and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Oct. 6.
