U.S. Coast Guard crews rescued 37 people marooned on a boat 88 miles off of Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard Aug. 28.
At about 3:40 p.m., the Coast Guard's Los Angeles-Long Beach on-duty officers received a radio notification of a 30-foot recreational boat drifting 88 miles southwest of Channel Islands Harbor, according to a Coast Guard news release. Initial reports said the vessel didn't have fuel, food or water for two days and didn't have personal safety equipment, officials said.
Crews assigned to vessels including Coast Guard Cutter Sockeye and stations in Los Angeles-Long Beach, Channel Islands responded, the release says.
At about 8:30 p.m., Coast Guard crews located and boarded the vessel, finding 37 people, all suspected of entering the United
States without permission, officials said.
All of the people rescued were taken aboard the Sockeye, the Coast Guard said. Once those people were taken to the Los Angeles-Long Beach base, they were transferred to U.S. Border Patrol.
