Looking forward to Karl’s Village
The planned development of Karl’s Village at the corner of Channel Islands Boulevard and Victoria Avenue represents something much bigger than the construction of new buildings. It represents an opportunity to create a vibrant place for our communities.
This is a significant location because at the intersection of Channel Islands and Victoria it brings together four jurisdictions — the city of Port Hueneme, the city of Oxnard, Naval Base Ventura County and the county of Ventura. Few places in our region so clearly demonstrate how closely our communities are connected. What happens at this important intersection can benefit residents far and beyond the immediate boundaries of any one city or county.
Karl’s Village has the potential to bring new
economic activity, services, and investment to an area that is strategically positioned. Thoughtful development can create a stronger connection between our communities while providing opportunities for families, businesses, and future generations.
As someone who cares deeply about the future of Port Hueneme and our surrounding communities, I believe we should welcome responsible investment that strengthens our neighborhoods while respecting the character and needs of the people who already call this area home.
The corner of Channel Islands Boulevard and Victoria Avenue will become more than just an intersection. It will be a symbol of cooperation, opportunity, and a shared future for the cities of Oxnard and Port Hueneme, as well as the Navy and Ventura County.
I look forward to seeing Karl’s Village become part of that future.
Steven Gama, former mayor of Port Hueneme and current Port Hueneme City Council member
A way to make voter ID fair
Voting is a right guaranteed by the Constitution. Currently, government-issued forms of identification include state-issued license to drive and passports issued by the U.S. State Department. License and passport must be purchased. Both driving and international travel are privileges granted to those who can afford to pay.
There is a big push by the president to end vote by mail and to start voter ID. It is hypocritical of the president, who has voted by mail, to put an end to a convenient way for the elderly and military to vote. The only way to make voter ID fair is to issue the necessary identification at the time of registration at no cost, so that all eligible citizens can make their voices be heard.
