An Oxnard resident, 52, died Sept. 4 after being taken to a hospital following a suspected DUI incident and complaints of pain.
On Sept. 3 at about 10:52 p.m., Oxnard Police Department officers responded with emergency medical services personnel to a vehicle crash at the intersection of West Fifth Street and Portofino Place between two vehicles, according to a department news release.
The drivers were both Oxnard residents and one was Sergio Martinez, 52, the release says. He wasn't injured and refused medical attention, police said. The other driver, a 34-year-old female, was taken to a local hospital on an ambulance with minor injuries. The two didn't have passengers in their vehicles.
Officers found from an initial investigation the female driver
was on her Dodge headed westbound on Fifth Street, officials said. Martinez was driving through an industrial park on his Toyota and allegedly entered Fifth Street without yielding to the Dodge.
Martinez was suspected of showing signs of impairment by alcohol and/or drugs, police said. Officers arrested him and took him by ambulance to a local hospital. While in the hospital's emergency room, Martinez complained of pain, the release says.
He became unresponsive and unconsciousness and was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m., officials said.
