Lowe’s was ordered to pay $546,600 in fees, costs, civil penalties and restitution in a multi-county lawsuit alleging the company violated California gift card law.
Lowe’s Home Centers LLC entered into a stipulated judgement in Sonoma County Superior Court for a civil enforcement action brought on by the district attorney’s offices of Sonoma, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, according to a Sept. 16 news release from the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
An investigation brought on by the three district attorneys’ offices alleges that the retailer did not redeem qualifying gift cards for cash when requested at locations throughout the state.
California law prohibits gift cards from having expiration dates and allows consumers to redeem
gift cards for cash when valued at less than $15 when requested.
Through the settlement Lowe’s is required to comply with the law and inform consumers of their rights by taking the following measures:
- Add information about consumer rights to physical gift cards, their website and customer service and returns areas in the store.
- Train employees on the gift card law and gift card redemption requirements.
