Authorities identified the man who died on Aug. 8 from injuries suffered in a shooting in Ventura days earlier.
Fredy Velasquez, 20, was from Santa Paula, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. He died of a gunshot wound to the head and neck, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Velasquez arrived at the Ventura County Medical Center with gunshot wounds on Aug. 4, the Ventura Police Department previously said.
Officers responded to the area of Riverside and Ramona streets around 1:05 a.m. in response to a shooting but did not find a victim, and the shooter had fled the area, police said.
Police later identified Velasquez as the victim of the shooting after being informed that he was in the hospital, officials said.
No arrests had
been made as of 9 a.m. on Aug. 14, and the police department is continuing to investigate the shooting, said police Cmdr. Edward Caliento.
Investigators believe the shooting was isolated, and there is no immediate threat to the public. The department has requested that anyone with information about the shooting contact Sgt. Fabian Gutierrez at 805-339-4428.
Velasquez's death marks the second homicide in Ventura in 2026.
