The Simi Valley Police Department named the officer who shot a man at Los Robles Regional Medical Center July 2.
Officer Carly Grice, who has worked for the Simi police for nearly five years, shot her gun once while she was guarding Luis Santiago Ramirez-Macias at the Thousand Oaks hospital, according to Cmdr. Bryan Samples. The July 2 shooting was her first as an officer, he said.
Grice was hired in August 2021 and has only worked in law enforcement in Simi Valley, Samples said.
Ramirez-Macias had been taken into custody earlier in the day following a domestic violence incident in which he had suffered a self-inflicted wound. The 46-year-old Simi Valley man and his wife were transported to Los Robles for treatment.
Simi police had been to the couple's
home on Clover Street for a stabbing around 1:30 a.m., according to previous reports.

Grice was assigned to guard Ramirez-Macias and noticed he needed more medical attention.
Around 12:20 p.m. while he was being treated, Ramirez-Macias grabbed a glass medical vial that he fashioned into a "edged weapon," Samples said. The man used the vial on himself "before suddenly attacking Officer Grice," the commander said.
Grice used her gun and struck Ramirez-Macias one time, and hospital personnel immediately treated him for his wounds, Samples said.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting because it happened in Thousand Oaks, which contracts with the agency for police services.
The Star has also requested video from the shooting. Samples said Simi police expect to release a video but must work with the sheriff's office as it investigates.
"We are still sorting through the evidence made available to us," Samples said. "We anticipate distributing the video on a future update."
Ramirez-Macias has since been charged with felony attempted murder and inflicting bodily injury on a partner. He is being held in Ventura County jail on $510,000 bail.
He appeared in Ventura County Superior Court July 13 but has yet to enter a plea. He is scheduled to return to court Aug. 12, according to jail and court records.
